Welcome to the upper echelon of the beautiful game Tottenham.
In what was a riveting match at White Heart Lane yesterday, Spurs outplayed top of League Manchester United. Indeed it looks like with Juande Ramos in charge, Spurs will be at the top of English and European football for a long time to come.
During the transfer window, the new Spanish manager brought in four defenders and those acquisitions combined with a higher fitness level and more disciplined play had the team looking very, very impressive. Spurs defended well, pressured well, passed the ball with style and attacked with real passion. What a team.
Even United manager Alex Ferguson had praise for Spurs:
"I must say, Spurs were very good and must take credit. They are on the up, Juande Ramos has done a fantastic job."
United meanwhile dissappointed us here at TBGSE, your arbitrar of things beautiful in football: 7 deserved yellow cards, including one for a dive by Wayne Rooney? Come on. One has to ask during a season when their Christmas party landed them in trouble with the police, what kind of team is this United?
Certainly they don't like to lose--hence all of the cards. Are they back to the Winning Is Beautiful category? Just days after calling them Beautiful United , I have to ask myself: "What was I thinking?", particualry after having to listen to Ferguson's post-match moaning about the excellent refereeing of Mark Clattenburg:
"There's something wrong when Manchester United get seven bookings."
Indeed there is something seriously wrong, Alex. Are you really a defender of the beautiful game?
But despite my recurring disappointment with United, I have to say that this for me was to date the best match of the year. As the television commentator said in the 58th minute, it was:
"...one of those games that you cannot take your eyes off."

Back to the office for a cup of tea
This site has been reluctant to call Manchester United a beautiful team this season mostly due to the antics of manager Alex Ferguson.
The question we have is: Do you have to be good, well behaved and abide by the rules, to be beautiful? If not, then United qualify and you really do have to say that they are playing beautiful football these days.
Yesterday they dominated Portsmouth with a 2-Nil win and Cristiano Ronaldo was superb. Particularly beautiful was his free kick goal, which left Ferguson gushing:
"It was a marvellous hit and no keeper in the world was going to save it because it was right in the junction of the post and the crossbar...He practises all the time and there are four or five of them that do it after training. It's great to see because I can just go back to the office for a cup of tea and watch them whacking them in!"
Very well then Alex, we now dub your team Beautiful United...

Only Arsenal Play Beautiful Football?
From United On Fire:
"Media Fact 3 Only Arsenal play beautiful football. This is just snobbery in the media. Not even Arsenal fans (well most) believe this. It is true that Arsenal play good football, but so do many other teams." More >

Lawton on Fergie's Behaviour
"Will he ever mellow? Will he ever take off the clothes of a curmudgeon when things do not go quite as well as he likes?...No, he will not – not as long as he does what he does so masterfully. Not if he fights harder than some kid trying to make his way. No, it is not always attractive. Indeed, sometimes it is more than a little outrageous. The weekend saw a classic effusion...The huge consensus was that it was a match of beautiful ambition – and quite a lot of beautiful content – at the Emirates. Arsenal and United shared the points and the praise, but there was Fergie raging on..." More >

Hargreaves on United's Beauty
United's great midfielder Owen Hargreaves thinks that his team played the more beautiful football when they met Arsenal (Beautiful FC ) in Saturday's much anticipated game of the year:
"Arsenal kept the ball and had a lot of possession, but they were never really threatening...Football is about scoring goals and winning games...Defensively, we did a good job and tried to control their so-called beautiful football...Both of our goals were from really beautiful pieces of play and theirs were a bit more scrappy."
